This has been a go-to recipe of mine for nearly a decade! Ignore the lack of pizzazz with the above-photo....

I began making these well before pre-made vegetarian patties evolved past the Morningstar frozens (if you know, you know).

I love this recipe because it has a very delicious flavour profile made from a combination of unique ingredients. Who thought that Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, and cumin would go so well together?

Pro-tip, make a large batch and store pre-formed patties in the freezer for next time. Otherwise, leave raw mixture or patties in the fridge for up to a couple of days and cook fresh. Another pro-tip, the mixture can feel really paste-y and wet. If medium-high heat cooks the outside too fast and the inside too slow, reduce the heat and cover with a lid.

Ingredients:
400 g (14 oz) can black beans, drained
1/2 cup old fashioned oats, ground up
1/2 small onion, minced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup mushroom, minced
1 tbsp nutritional yeast
2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp tahini
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
2 tsp soy sauce or GF tamari
1.5 tsp lemon juice
Oil for the pan

Hamburger buns
Sweet potato fries (optional but delicious)

Toppings:
Mayo
Avocado
Lettuce
Tomato
Cheese

Directions:
1. In a large bowl, mash black beans with a fork until chunky, then add the ground oats.

2. Sauté the onion and garlic in a splash of oil for a few minutes until just softened, but not cooked through.

3. To the beans, add onion & garlic mix, mushroom, nutritional yeast, cumin, salt, tahini, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and lemon juice. Mix until a thick batter is formed.

4. Put the bean mixture in the fridge for at least 30 minutes, so the flavours can meld.

5. Form at least four patties with the bean mixture.

6. Heat a skillet with oil on medium-high and cook the patties 6-7 minutes on each side, until crisp and light brown.

7. Serve on buns with toppings and sweet potato fries (optional but delicious).
